What the gallbladder does

The gallbladder stores bile, which helps you digest fat. Stones may cause no trouble at all or may block the normal flow of bile. A blockage causes pain, inflammation or complications in nearby ducts and the pancreas. Where the pain sits and how long it lasts help clinicians decide what to investigate.

People with gallstones often get attacks of pain after food, but the pattern is rarely neat. Pain without a fatty meal can still come from the gallbladder. Discomfort after a rich meal does not prove stones are to blame.

How Wegovy and weight loss affect gallstone risk

Wegovy trials reported gallstone events, and they appear in the product safety information. Changes in the body during weight loss also help gallstones form. So no single event can be blamed wholly on the drug or wholly on weight loss.

Tell your prescriber about known stones, past attacks, gallbladder surgery or previous pancreatitis. A history of these does not decide on its own whether Wegovy suits you. The prescriber does need the information to make a balanced decision and a useful safety plan.

Symptoms to act on

Get medical advice for significant pain in the upper abdomen, especially pain lasting more than a short episode or coming back. Pain on the right side under the ribs is worth mentioning. Tell the clinician about any vomiting, fever or tenderness.

Severe pain with fever, shaking chills, yellow skin or eyes, dark urine or pale stools needs urgent assessment. Pain spreading to your back with vomiting may also point to pancreatitis. Do not keep treating these signs as reflux while you wait for your next routine prescription.

What tests show and what they miss

Assessment may include blood tests and an ultrasound scan. Silent gallstones are common, so finding stones does not always explain every symptom. Clinicians read the scan alongside your history and examination.

Treatment depends on whether stones cause symptoms or complications. Some people need surgery and others need a different plan. Online advice to cut out all fat, take supplements or flush the gallbladder is no substitute for that assessment and may delay proper treatment.

Eating and staying on Wegovy

Aim for a way of eating you can keep up. Avoid harsh restriction meant to speed weight loss. If certain meals keep triggering pain, tell the team treating you and ask for dietary advice that still gives you enough nutrition. Faster weight loss is not always better.

Decide with your prescriber and any hospital team whether to continue, pause or restart Wegovy after gallbladder symptoms. Gallbladder disease differs from confirmed pancreatitis, which carries a specific instruction never to restart semaglutide. Keep a clear record of the diagnosis and discharge advice, so future clinicians do not base treatment on a vague account of a 'stomach attack'.
