What the medicine is

Semaglutide is the active ingredient. Wegovy is the brand, and the tablet is one formulation. Tablets and injections deliver the medicine in different ways, so the milligram figure on a tablet does not compare with the figure on a pen. How much you absorb from a tablet depends on following the instructions for taking it.

UK tablet strengths are 1.5 mg, 4 mg, 9 mg and 25 mg. You start low and increase step by step as your prescriber directs. Wegovy tablets are a prescription medicine. They are no over-the-counter supplement, and they are not designed to remove normal hunger completely.

How the tablet differs from other semaglutide products

The tablet licence covers adult weight management alongside changes to diet and physical activity. Uses licensed for semaglutide injections do not carry over to the tablet. Rybelsus is another oral semaglutide product. A different product name, use or tablet strength must never be swapped in without the prescriber knowing.

The difference most people notice is a daily fasting routine in place of a weekly injection. This suits many people who dislike needles. If your mornings involve several medicines or irregular meals, the routine is harder to keep.

Licence, prescription and NHS access

A marketing authorisation sets the uses and conditions a regulator has assessed. A prescription is a clinician's decision for one person. NHS access depends on national recommendations, funding and local treatment pathways. Each step is a separate decision, so a licence does not mean everyone can get the tablets.

Buying privately still requires an assessment, a genuine prescription and a registered pharmacy to dispense. A good service tells you about follow-up, what happens if treatment does not suit you, how urgent problems are handled and when treatment is reviewed. A price or introductory offer tells you none of this.

Where to find reliable information

Start with the UK patient leaflet for practical instructions. Then use the Summary of Product Characteristics for full prescribing detail. Trial papers answer narrower questions about particular groups, formulations, doses and follow-up periods. Personal stories raise useful questions but show neither how often an effect happens nor its cause.

The source-check date shows when the linked material was last checked. The current official label takes priority over any older explainer. Confirm your own instructions with your prescribing team.

Search with the medicine name and formulation together. A search for the brand alone mixes patient leaflets, injection instructions, overseas products and adverts. Check the country and publication date first, so you apply each statement to the right product and setting.

Questions for your appointment

Ask whether the fasting routine fits around your other medicines, which health outcomes will be reviewed and what support you get if your appetite or side effects change. Confirm the prescription is for Wegovy tablets, at the correct strength, with a follow-up plan.

Your own medicine leaflet and prescriber come first. A source from another country does not mean the same rule applies in the UK.
