How the gallbladder works
The gallbladder stores bile, which helps you digest food. Gallstones can form and sometimes block the flow of bile. Some people carry stones without symptoms. Others get bouts of pain or complications such as inflammation or a blockage.
Weight loss on its own is linked with gallstone risk, and tirzepatide studies have also reported gallbladder events. Welcome weight loss tells you nothing about your personal risk. Include any past gallstones or gallbladder surgery in your medical history.
Gallbladder symptoms to look out for
Gallstone pain usually sits in the upper abdomen, sometimes under the right ribs. The pain tends to last longer than a brief cramp. Nausea or vomiting may come with it. Patterns vary, and the site of the pain alone does not confirm the diagnosis.
Get urgent medical advice for a fever, yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools or significant pain that persists. These signs point to a possible complication. Sudden severe pain or feeling seriously unwell may need emergency assessment. Do not write these signs off as normal side effects of a dose increase.
Gallbladder pain and pancreatitis overlap
Gallstones can trigger pancreatitis, and both conditions cause severe abdominal symptoms. You cannot safely tell them apart from descriptions online. Severe pain that persists, especially pain spreading into the back, needs immediate assessment for pancreatitis.
Take no further Mounjaro doses while suspected pancreatitis is investigated. After a gallbladder diagnosis, your clinician decides whether treatment continues. That decision rests on the diagnosis, the treatment you need and the overall balance of benefit and risk.
What a gallbladder assessment involves
A clinician may examine your abdomen, order blood tests or arrange an ultrasound scan. Explain how long the episodes last, where the pain is and whether food seems to bring it on. Mention any fever, vomiting or change in the colour of your urine or stools.
Give the team your tirzepatide dose and the date of your latest injection. Tell them how fast your weight has changed and about any past gallstones. Keep the appointment even if the pain eases for a while. A stone that blocks the flow on and off causes episodes of pain with gaps in between.
Raise gallbladder pain at your next medication review
Discuss repeated discomfort in the upper right abdomen before your dose goes up again. A pharmacist can direct you to the right care. Treating symptoms is no substitute for investigation when gallbladder disease is suspected. No home supplement makes a worrying episode safe to ignore.
After a diagnosis, ask how the treatment plan affects your next injection, eating, fluids and any planned procedure. If you need surgery, tell the anaesthetic team you take Mounjaro, because slower stomach emptying affects planning for procedures. Ask for a clear decision on recovery and restarting, and do not work it out from an old prescription. Be open about a gallstone history and any symptoms. Hiding them to keep your medicine puts you at risk.
